8th Grade Literacy is working on a novel study for “Touching Spirit Bear”, a realistic fiction piece where students delve into character traits, what makes a protagonist and antagonist and how character traits evolve over time, through conflict and resolution. They are also making connections with text-to-text, text-to-self and text-to world. The setting for our novel is the northern-most point of Alaska so we’ve been developing a deeper understanding of the arctic-like habitat and Native Alaskan tribes too. #MVPride

Students in 8th Grade Literacy are working on “What if? Critical and Creative Thinking Challenges.” Students are using Kagan structures to organize their groups, encourage engagement and hold each other accountable. Research topics include: Abraham Lincoln, The Great Depression, The Atomic Bomb, Rosa Parks, The Roman Empire and the invention of the printing press. Standards addressed are: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/ social studies; distinguishing among fact, opinion and reasoned judgement in a text and interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative and figurative meanings. Students will create a group project to include each individual component and present to their peers. #MVPride

Today at the middle school and high school we implemented our first advisory time. Why did we decide to implement Advisory time? We received feedback from the School Improvement Advisory Committee and community partners about continuing the positive activities and impacts they have seen from elementary Family Groups. We also had feedback from our students and staff regarding additional ways that we could make better connections; adult-student and student-student. If students understand and connect with others from different grade levels, with different experiences, and different backgrounds, it can help them create a sense of belonging and connectedness (can reduce feelings of isolation and enhance the overall school experience). Staff also wanted to learn more about students and continue to build relationships with them during non-academic time. We know that continuing to build relationships can be a key to a positive school experience. Advisory groups can be a way to contribute to creating a positive school culture by reinforcing positive interactions with each other and working on building skills students can use throughout their lifetime (communication skills, leadership development, character development, goal setting, etc.). An added bonus—we wanted to create a fun and safe space for students to be a part of another community. Somewhere different than the classroom, but not specific to their interests, such as music, art, or sports, where they are interacting with mostly people that they already know. We had a great first day of advisory and look forward to our next monthly activity! #MVPride

Our goal is to get students and families connected to the district and help continue to build the pride in our school! Take a look at our middle school clubs, organizations, elective courses, and athletics! Come be a part of the fun! We are also thankful of our staff and everything they offer for our students! #MVPride

A goal in the middle school this year has been making our hallways more about our students and establishing school pride! At the beginning of the year we added new graphics and a student information board located outside the office. We took these frames in the hallway to help support our goal! Pictures included are from athletics, activities, science labs, classroom activities, school dances and more! Our students have a blast! Thanks Mrs. Epperly for helping in completing the project! #MVPride
